My Thai wife always told me there is no way to get to Khao Sahn Road easily using mainly the Sky Train network, On my last trip to Thailand as I was arriving alone I thought I would try the trip I mapped out as there was no easy google map auto prediction of the journey taking you strange ways to which seemed to be quite straight forward.

If there was more than 2 person would probably be cheaper to just get a taxi but depending on Bangkok traffic may not be much faster. Which would be approx 330 Baht (including the airport fee of 50 baht) but excluding the Tolls which may be needed depending on the time of travel and usually insisted by the taxi driver.

Simple Explanation of route

1. Go to the bottom Floor of Suvarnabhumi Airport
2. Pay 35 baht per person at the Airport Rail Link gate.
   to go to Makkasan Station.
3. Ride 5 stops (approx 22 mins)
4. Exit the pay gate & Follow Signs to walk to Phetchaburi MRT station (keep left along skywalk)
5. Buy a ticket for 35 baht to Sam Yot Station
6. Go down Escalator and get on Train on SIDE 1
7. Ride 9 stops (approx 18mins)
   – *NOTE* The 1st station you stop at should be Sukhumvit station if you got on the wrong side just transfer here to the opposite way.
8. Follow signs to Exit 1 at SAM YOT MRT Station
9. Get a taxi from the exit at the stairs of exit 1. You will be heading in the same direction of the road as at exit faces.
   – To Khao San Road Meter cost Approx 45-50 baht (Approx 8 Mins)

Detailed route

2. At the gate, you will pay 35 baht per person either to the counter or machine and select Makkaan Station scan your token at the gate
3. The airport line is the end of the line so you can board the train on either side. Be aware once the train arrives and people disembark they will close the train doors and do a security check and clean before you board. These trains arrive around every 8 mins in my experience.
4. Ride 5 stops and get outGo to the bottom floor of Suvarnabhumi Airport and either take the flat escalators or elevator. Note there are not many elevators around and often are full and take a long time usually quicker to just take the long flat escalators.
5. At the gate, you will pay 35 baht per person either to the counter or machine and select Makkasan Station scan your token at the gate

7. Ride 5 stops taking about 22 min getting off train at MAKKASAN STATION
8. Take exit 2 and follow the signs to Phetchaburi MRT station the walk will take approx 5-7 minutes. The signs are very visible and follow the crowd of people as most will be heading the same way
9. Purchase a ticket/token to SAM YOT from vending machine or counter at the gateway
10. Go down the escalator and get on the train on SIDE 1
11. To ensure you have entered the correct train you will stop at Sukhumvit station on the first stop. If you happen to get on the wrong side just transfer at the next station
12. From Sam Yot, you will ride 9 stops taking approximately 18 min
13. Once you disembark at Sam Yot MRT Station you will head up 2 really long escalators and want to head to exit 1.
14. Once you pass the pay point place your token in the exit gate and walk to the road. You will be on the correct side of the road so just head down the 4 or so stairs and get a taxi directly out the door
15. The taxi will cost approx 50 baht. There is no taxi stand here but they will frequently pull up if none here. You may also opt for a Tuk Tuk but you will have to negotiate a price before you go otherwise you may get a shock of 200 baht+ when arriving. Generally a TUK TUK will cost more.
16. You will arrive at Khao San Road in approx 8 mins

As a tourist, I never realised how many amazing coffee shops there are scattered around Thailand. Now that I am living half the year here I find my family members on their days of love to go to visit the jaw-dropping ones. We are obsessed with driving all over Thailand & our friends can never keep up what province we are in.

Southern Cross Cafe

At Southern Cross, as you walk in you are greeted by the petting zoo of statue animals. Although the food is what makes this place stand out. Almost everything is made to order there and the best flavours of International and Thai cuisine can be tasted here.

Moai Coffee ร้านกาแฟ โมอาย คอฟฟี่

Escape from Thailand to the Easter Islands for just long enough to take some photos. We saw this place on the drive camping in Suan Phung and stopped on the way home. I would not go out of my way to visit here but if it is on your way to where you are going definitely stop through.

House 1,000 wood Cafe & Farm – บ้าน ๑,๐๐๐ ไม้

Alongside the Bang Toei river is the great cafe and small farm. It has some fun free activities for the kids like getting water from the well, sandpits and has never-ending beautiful photo spots. If you are traveling from Bangkok to Ayutthaya or vice versa this would make a perfect stop for a bit of chill time.

Baanna Cafe – บ้านนากาแฟ

Baanna Kafe is in a beautiful location on a large rice field with a backdrop of mountains. There is an endless photo opportunity for a great photo and there is a resident Great Dane who is ever so friendly.

Na Krung Kao – นากรุงเก่า

Na Krung Kao would have to be the biggest coffee shop/ restaurant we have been to in Thailand. The grounds have been designed over many rice fields to truly leave people wowed! If you were traveling from Bangkok to Ayutthaya this would be a great choice to stop by for a look!

Menna มีนา cafe’ Kanchanaburi

Thai people love to do a day trip to Wat Tham Suea. Followed by a stop to the famous noodle cafe and Menna Cafe. It is a beautiful site located in Kanchanaburi overlooking a rice field and you can see the temple at the top of the mountain. I recommend you do all 3. But this post all about coffee shops so you will have to read about on the link below

Ma Ha Cafe Boon – มา-หา กาแฟบุญ วัดหุบกระทิง

Ma Ha Cafe Boon is a great project that was started by the local temple. The head monk had a vision of empty land to be transformed into a paradise that benefits their community as well as teaches farming techniques and the way of Buddhism. That’s right all the profit goes back into increasing this project and supporting the locals.

Tara Coffee ธาราคอฟฟี่

Tara coffee has a relaxing vibe to it with bean bags to chill on next to the Mae Klong river. Their menu is all presented with love. They truly give 110% in the presentation of food.

Rain Tree Coffee

Rain Tree Coffee Shop was one of the first themed coffee shops I visited outside of Bangkok. I really enjoy walking around there garden and looking at everything. You can combine a trip here with the unique77 as they are next door to each other

If you are a car enthusiast Unique 77 is the place for you to go. The owner has a private collection of ever-changing cars you can go and drool over. Located next to Rain Tree Coffee why not just do both?

Cafe Chedi – คาเฟ่-เจดีย์ – Suphan Buri

Cafe Chedi คาเฟ่-เจดีย์. It is located along the Song Phi Nong river overlooking the Sapan Khong Floating Market. If your feeling adventurous, They have hammock style nets to chill in overhanging the river.

Pin Fah Farm – ปิ่นฟ้าฟาร์ม -Pathum Thani

On the border of Ayutthaya district is this great farm where you can enjoy the surroundings of nature with some activities for the kids. The food is cheap, There is a petting zoo, paddle boats and can also feed the fish! Enough to keep everyone entertained.

Pad Thai is the first dish that will come to mind for many when thinking of Thailand’s food. If your leaving Bangkok and heading west to Banpong, Ratchaburi, Kanchanaburi or possibly Suan Phueng for a day or longer I will share with you my favourite places to stop on the way for lunch/dinner for the best Pad Thai’s west of BKK.

I have been living in Banpong on and off for the last couple years so have been lucky enough to find the best for you to try. If you have never heard of Banpong it is in the Ratchaburi province and known as the city of nice people & I must say they are very friendly here.

Southern Cross Banpong – Quality

Would be my #1 favourite. It is in my opinion the highest quality ingredients and the sauce is to die for! I have enjoyed many consistently the same. The price is slightly higher but the flavours definitely are worth the wait!

I really enjoy the ambiance of Raintree Cafe, it has a homely feel and there Pad Thai Gung is fantastic. If your looking to take some photos as well they have a lovely garden area.

Banpong’s City Pad Thai – Street Food

Well i’m not sure what they are officially called but don’t let that stop you trying it. I have had alot of street Pad Thai’s over the years and would have to say this is by far my favourite. I always get the Pork (moo) and served with some crunchy pork fat on the side which I have never encountered before.

The map points to a tire shop. They pull up in the late afternoon to evening there. They don’t have an official google map point. Just look for the blue shirts!

Best Beef in Bangkok on Sukhumvit is one of my favourite all you can eat & drink venues in Bangkok. The venue is gigantic with over 100 tables and getting a table you will generally have to wait if get here much after 7 pm. It is all cook your own. You just put numbers next to what meats, vegetables & condiments you want and they just keep bringing it for 2 whole hours.

I’m generally not a fan of buffet-style all you can eat venues as I always the first to point out people sneezing, coughing and touching the food I want to eat. Not to mention the cross-contamination of the same tongs from the meats to seafood and then onto the fresh produce. But here they get it right. You order and they bring to you on small portions on little plates direct from the kitchen. At least this way the risk of handling of food is minimised dramatically

4pm to 12am – 7 days
Meaning you would want to be seated no later than 10 pm to get your full 2-hour sitting

Booking a table at Best Beef Bangkok

You can call up to book a table in advance. Or get your hotel or Thai speaking friend to do for you.

You don’t need a booking but if you are arriving after 7 pm they are generally full. You can take a ticket and wait in the queue. Depending on how many people on your table determines how long you can wait. 2 & 4 persons seem to wait less time than bigger tables

Buffet Prices at Best Beef Bangkok

There are 3 options for the all you can eat buffet over 2 hours.

Option 1 – Buffet Only 299 baht
Option 2 – Buffet + bottomless soft drink 369 baht
Option 3 – Buffet + bottomless soft drink & beer 499 baht

-100cm-120cm is 159 baht

-Everyone who sits at the table must order the same option
-Prices above do not include service charge 10 baht per person + tax
-They will charge 100baht per 100g leftover (although we never have been)
-Beers will be given at 2 long neck bottles at a time

Is it worth getting the all you can drink beer package?

Well, they charge 100 baht per Large beer if you don’t. So if 3 out of 4 drink beer and 1 only want soft drink your bill will still be charged at 4x the beer package rate.
To make it have value over just paying as you go in this scenario you would have to drink 9 large beers between the 3 persons to come out in front. So 3 beers per person over 2 hours. Anything after that it just all a bonus. (The difference from food only price to including beer is 200 baht)

But… There is a reason its only beer. Beer bloats you so if you drink more beer, You are going to eat less food. If you plan on just having a snack and getting into the beers. You need to drink 6 Large beers per person in 2 hours and graze lightly (or heavily if u can) to make the beer package beneficial.

So the maths
1 large beer every 20 mins,
is 3 in an hour (300 baht)
is 6 in the 2 hours (600 baht)

1 large beer every 15 mins
is 4 in an hour (400 baht)
is 8 in the 2 hours (800 baht)

the cheapest I have seen Chang Beer is 47 baht a large bottle in Big C warm in a box of 12 – 564 baht.
So 10 large beers in 2 hours and you have beaten the system and eaten for free 🙂

But seriously drink responsibly. Don’t be a drunken twat in Thailand.

Heaven@4 is on Sukhumvit Soi 4 aka Nana Plaza which is the heart of the red light district in Bangkok. There are many great bars in walking distance that have live music and there is one nightclub on Soi 4 called EQ. Just a few minute’s walk to Nana Plaza “the adult’s playground”. This hotel has a strict policy of only 2 people per room, or have to pay 700 baht per additional person. We had an issue even having friends (another couple) come to our room just for a few drinks before we went out, they said nothing though when we drank 2 bottles of whiskey and soda water from the 7-11 at the bar.

We booked 2 junior suites, but my room was upgraded to the Executive Suite which is there most expensive room. Both rooms had totally different features and are definitely designed for a range of activities one could only imagine in the red light district.

The main differences where the executive suite has a spa bath which would fit 2 smaller people along with 2 sofas the 3 seater in a water resistant washable fabric (hmmn wonder why).The spa did fit One fat white man and a petite asian lady, yes Luna 🙂 in the same time but most the water ended up on the floor and it was a tight squeeze. Where the junior suite had no spa but a massive raised cushioned play area in a seedy red colour. Now I know why they charge 700 baht extra per person you could fit 10 people in here, this is on top of a queen bed. Ill leave the rest to your imagination or planning .

There is also signage in room and elevator about damage to there urrrm sheets as will incur replacement charges. Maybe if she is grumpy *wink wink* don’t bring her here.

Are you craving a Vietnamese Bun Me roll in Bangkok? Today my buddy Fred took me to this new Vietnamese meat roll place called Bahn Mi Cafe and it’s near On Nut BTS. They have also opened a new store called BunMe2go on Soi 11 close to Nana BTS.

I ordered the pork belly roll to not be disappointed. The bread was slightly different from the traditional roll and more like a baguette but was still super crunchy on the outside like a traditional roll also was served warm.
If your craving a roll in Thailand this is definitely worth a try. They even serve ice-cold beer to wash it down with!

*Tip* If you enjoy the Vietnamese roll as much as I did and plan to return here they have a rewards card be sure to ask them about it!

A new store BunMe2go has just opened on Sukhumvit Soi 11 at Nana it is only 2-minute walk from the BTS. I have not stopped in yet but sure they will be amazing too. Below I have put their Facebook page and map to get there.

Nothing more freaky than staring into the eyes of A lifelike wax sculpture. I found this place really interesting maybe more so because I went with 2 Thai people from different generations who could explain what was going on. There is a floor of monks and royalty and upstairs has wax figures in displays of cultural traditions.

If you were in Bangkok for just a few days to a week or two I would not make the trip here unless you had a car or you have an activity nearby. As it is not along the rail system. If you are going to be in Thailand for an extended time or really want to know more about famous monks or old traditions and royal family sure come along, There are a few famous people here like old presidents of America but not very many like Madame Tussauds.

Do note you are not allowed to take photos in the room with the Thai Royal Family. Also, some of the sculptures can take photos of but not with (as behind barriers)

Condoms & Cabbages has to be one of my favourite restaurants in Bangkok! Such a unique quirky theme. Yet the food is to die for. My personal favourites are the purple dumplings. I always try and make a stop here on a trip to Bangkok. The prices are a little high, But the proceeds go to a good cause. Quite possibly the only restaurant to give you a condom instead of an after-dinner mint! They have a gift shop that you can buy some bizarre condom related merchandise. Or just walk around after a meal and meet Santa Condom Clause and the other Condom made hosts. This place is so condom crazy even the light shades are made of them. The restaurant’s motto is “our food won’t make you pregnant”

What more could you ask for when dining other than to be served over a table full of frangers. Let’s just pray they are unused.
